Product Feature and Application of the BS 5438 Flammability Tester
Install the fabric sample on the fixture of the instrument and burn the sample according to the required flame for a certain period of time to record the relevant data (burning time) for assessing its combustion performance.
Product Details of the BS 5438 Flammability Tester
Three specimens shall be tested in the machine direction and three in the cross direction in
accordance with test 3 of BS 5438 using a 10 s flame application time, except that the vertical trip threads shall not be used. None of the six specimens shall sever the 300 mm trip thread in less than 25 s.
None of the six specimens shall sever the 600 mm trip thread in less than 50 s.
If any one of the six specimens tested fails to comply with either performance requirement, then a further six specimens shall be tested
None of the second group of specimens shall fail either of the performance requirements.
